Description

Interventions 101 Training is a three-day virtual course focusing on the principles, philosophies and common practices of intervention theories and case management skills offering 21 CEUs.

It also provides students with resources and networks, and it can be used as a sufficient guideline for professionals wishing to change fields or add value to their current jobs.

 

As a team, both Patricia Pike and Ed Storti bring their own professional experiences and an array of treatment & recovery experts offering evidence-based topics on addictions, mental health, family systems, trauma-informed theories, intervention theories, medical education, and assessment & treatment referrals,

 

Both Ed and Patti strongly believe in the standards of professionalism, credentials, and business fundamentals for practicing interventionists or those interested in becoming an interventionist, including education and professional development for others in the field of treatment and recovery.

 

Interventions 101 Training explains the terms and concepts of intervention theory and practices before laying out the processes to achieve national certification for the attendees seeking to be Certified Intervention Professionals or to serve as supporting team members such as; Case managers, Transporters, Sober Coaching, and Admission Personnel).

Educational Goals

1. Beneficial for people working as an interventionist or needing to gain CEUs for further education or those working in the addiction, mental health, medical, legal, and first responder areas.

2. Provides a comprehensive three-day orientation focusing on the principles, philosophies, and basics underpinning the most prominent intervention disciplines used today.

3. Gives a high-level summary of what to expect, how to effectively assist in the intervention process, and introduces participants to treatment resources and associations.

The training participants include a wide range of professionals such as addiction counselors, mental health clinicians, medical, interventionists, legal, and first responders that can benefit from this training. If they feel compelled to do so, students will be given explicit instructions on obtaining the Certified Intervention Professional (CIP) designation.

Patricia Pike

Patricia M. Pike, CEO of CanAm Interventions, is a Certified Intervention and Addiction Specialist trained expert with over 25 years of professional experience in the field of behavioral health treatment, specializing in substance abuse disorders and mental health conditions. Ms. Pike holds a master’s accredited certification in addiction studies and certified intervention professional certification. Ms. Pike has conducted crisis and case management interventions, treatment aftercare monitoring, and led education trainings for professionals nationally and internationally. Patricia is a Licensed Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LAADC), Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC-II), a long-standing member of the Canadian Addiction Counselor Association Federation, Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor through the IC&RC (I.C.A.A.D.C), Certified Intervention Professional (CIP), through the Pennsylvania Certification Board and an Education Diploma (AID) and is on the board of the nationally recognized Association of Intervention Specialists (AIS). With her own personal recovery journey for decades, professional experience, and educational background, Patricia is passionate about advocating for untreated individuals struggling with substance use disorders and mental health conditions and providing supportive services for families affected by addiction and/or mental health challenges. Patricia does not end up in the lives of her clients by mistake but through her vast experience, genuine nature, and passion for helping others. She is dedicated to creating a connection with her clients by utilizing a person-centered approach to meet her client’s needs by using customized intervention plans and crisis or case management professional services. Ms. Pike is a highly effective trauma-informed and family systemic interventionist of guiding individuals needing help to accept professional help. She holds citizenship in the United States and Canada, giving her a diverse professional perspective of working and using evidence-based practices in both countries. Ms. Pike is passionate about supporting other professionals in the substance use disorder and mental health fields. She has facilitated clinical intervention trainings in Canada and the United States that have helped many professionals become certified intervention professionals.

Ed Storti

Ed Storti, lecturer, author, and international Intervention Specialist, developed and refined his special method of addictive disease intervention, the Storti Model of Intervention, 41 years ago. Ed is an International and California Certified Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor and Board Registered Interventionist. He has choreographed thousands of interventions throughout the world. His authored books include Crisis Intervention: Acting Against Addiction (Crown Publishing Company, 1988) and Heart to Heart: The Honorable Approach to Motivational Intervention (Carlton Press, 1995, republished in 2001). Ed is also a contributing author of the book Addiction Recovery Tools, Robert Holman Coombs, Editor (published by Sage Publications, 2001). Ed devotes much of his time to education on the disease of addiction and the process of intervening. Two documentaries featured on television that highlighted his Storti Model of Intervention procedure are The Party’s Over, Lifetime Television, and The Journey Back, PBS Television. Ed has been a guest on the live Internet Talk Radio show Voice America numerous times. Ed is the recipient of the 2009 Spirit Award from the Gooden Center, Pasadena, California, the 2011 Pillar of the Community Recognition Award from Sierra Tucson Treatment Center, Tucson, Arizona, the 2013 Joseph L. Galleta, M.D., Spirit of Recovery Award from Hemet Valley Recovery Center and Sage Retreat, Hemet, California, 2016 Ken Schonlau Award For Outstanding Contribution To Sobriety from Share Center, Culver City, California, the 2017 Award for Pioneering Efforts in the Intervention Profession from Evolutions of Addiction Treatment, Long Beach, California and the recipient of the 2017 Promises Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award at the 12th Annual Polo in the Palisades.

William P. Carrick RN, MSN, CARN

William (Bill) Carrick is the founder and President of Executive Home Detox. He is recognized nationally and internationally in the behavioral health and substance use field. Bill is a Masters-Prepared Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN). He has over 40 years’ of experience in these fields. Executive Recovery Coach and Executive Home Detox is now in its fifteenth year. It is the oldest Home Detox company in existence and the only Home Detox program serving the majority of the continental United States. In addition, EHD has consulted internationally in Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Dr. Mel Pohl, MD

Mel Pohl, MD, DFASAM, is the Senior Medical Consultant of the Pain Recovery Program at The Pointe Malibu. Dr. Mel was a major force in developing the Las Vegas Recovery Center’s Chronic Pain Recovery Program. He is a Family Practitioner, certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM), and is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He is the author of A Day without Pain, revised edition (Central Recovery Press, 2011) and The Pain Antidote – Stop Suffering from Chronic Pain, Avoid Addiction to Painkillers, and Reclaim Your Life (DaCapo, 2015). Dr. Mel filmed a show for PBS on chronic pain which aired around the country in 2016.

Dr. Patrick Lockwood, Psy. D

Dr. Lockwood has worked in addiction treatment services and varying levels of responsibility prior to during and after his doctoral education for approximately the last 10 years. He has published a paper on neuroscience informed treatment of trauma. He’s worked exclusively with addiction and comorbid/cooccurrence disorders at his current place of employment. Is presented on the opioid epidemic and the neuroscience of addiction for PCI Westlake centers on a number of occasions for professionals working in treatment. Dr. Lockwood has an upcoming book titled “The Fear Problem” (in press with mascot books) discussing the revolutionary psychology of our fear process and its consequences for human relationships. Dr. Lockwood has trained with influential figures in the field of addiction like John daily, from recovery happens counseling services in Sacramento California. He has been developing expertise in the integration of interpersonal neurobiology perspectives into known research-based treatment modalities (i.e, motivational interviewing) with clients in both individual and group settings. He is an avid consumer of research related to neuroscience, attachment, affective neuroscience (e.g., Jak Panksepp’s work), trauma, and evolutionary psychology— reading between 12-30 journal articles per week. Bringing all this experience Dr. Lockwood has joined the Oak Forest Recovery team this year as Clinical Director.

Sonia Gupta, LMSW

Sonia Gupta grew up in Acadiana and has mostly lived in New Orleans since 2003, with stints in Denver and Los Angeles. She earned a B.A. in English and American Literature from New York University before graduating from law school at Loyola University New Orleans. Sonia then proudly served as a public defender, prosecutor, and assistant attorney general for the State of Louisiana. She also took a brief detour into tech as a software developer and developer advocate, which taught her that our social ills are best handled in the analog world, present with each other. Eventually Sonia found her way to social work and earned her MSW from Tulane’s School of Social Work. Since then, Sonia has worked primarily with individuals suffering from substance use and mental health disorders. Sonia believes in human resilience and redemption and understands that social change happens most powerfully in the connections between individuals. When she’s not actively working to improve her little corner of the planet, Sonia likes to hang out with her pup and enjoy all the perks of living in the beautiful City of New Orleans.

Dr. Jonathan Horey, MD

Jonathan Horey, MD is board-certified in psychiatry and addiction medicine, has completed advanced training in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and is an advanced candidate in psychoanalysis at the Oregon Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Horey completed medical school and psychiatry residency at Columbia University in New York City . After residency, Dr. Horey remained at Columbia as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Medical Director of Substance Abuse Services at the Columbia Doctors 51st Street clinic. In 2013, Dr. Horey returned to his hometown of Portland, OR where he opened a private practice and worked with professionals receiving addiction treatment at Betty Ford-Hazelden Springbrook before taking the position of Chief Medical Officer at Sunspire Health, a national group of residential addiction treatment centers. He later co-founded Active Recovery TMS, the first free-standing clinic to provide TMS treatment in the Portland area, eventually expanding to five locations. He has since returned to private practice and provides psychiatric and addiction medicine consultations to multiple organizations, including the Bel Air Recovery Center. Dr. Horey has lectured widely on addiction medicine and treatment resistant depression, with a particular emphasis on the application of TMS to a variety of psychiatric illnesses.

Dr. Michael Barnes, Ph. D, LAC, LPC

Dr. Michael Barnes is a Licensed Addiction Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Diplomate in the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. For the past four years, he has served as the Chief Clinical Officer at the Foundry Treatment Center in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He provides administrative and clinical oversight for all clinical programs. Dr. Barnes comes to the Foundry after serving for five years as the Clinical Manager of Residential Services at CeDAR (Center for Dependency, Addiction, and Rehabilitation) at the University of Colorado Hospital and 10 years as a full time clinical professor in Counseling. Most recently he served as the Clinical Coordinator and Clinical Associate Professor in the MA Program in Counseling at the University of Colorado Denver. Dr. Barnes has developed trauma integrated clinical models for the treatment of individuals with co-occurring addiction and trauma and trauma integrated family programs. He speaks nationally on Families, Trauma, and Addiction, Families Trauma and Addiction, and Compassion Fatigue. Dr. Barnes received his BA in Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, his M.Ed. in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Pittsburgh, and his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Florida State University. Dr. Barnes is an avid road cyclist and a beginning mountain biker. He also enjoys skiing, hiking/camping, fishing, Colorado Rockies Baseball, and Florida State Football. As a native of Hollidaysburg, PA (about 90 miles east of Pittsburgh) he also enjoys following Pitt Football and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins.

William Woodbury

William (Bill) Woodbury is a Substance Use Disorder Certified Counselor (SUDCC II) through CADTP who has worked in the field of Chemical Dependency since 1988. He has held many different positions throughout the years, both in for profit as well as non-profit settings. He has worked as an interventionist in both private practice and concurrently in his various roles at treatment centers throughout the years. He served as the director for the SHARE UNIT at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Pasadena for over 10 years. He went on to serve as the Program Director at New Found Life Residential Center in Long Beach from over a decade, leaving that position to start Bridging the Recovery Gap as well as devote the time to write EnableismTM with his wife and co-author, Linda. Over the years Bill has developed numerous educational lectures and workshops for private institutions, community colleges, and community-based organizations. Specifically, he had the opportunity to develop and teach curriculum in criminal behavior and chemical dependency at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. More recently, Bill is enjoying working as an equine assisted counselor serving individuals and families affected by SUD throughout the Greater Los Angeles/Orange County area. Mr. Woodbury has also begun working as a family coach, providing knowledge and practical support for family members who have been affected by addiction. Applying his over three decades of professional experience with key concepts from Enable- ismTM, Bill provides family members with foundational skills that support family resilience and eventual interdependency. Additionally, the two can be combined, providing a unique experiential and holistic approach to healing the family.

Keith Fierman

Keith Fierman is the Director of Family Support and Public Relations at Cirque Lodge. Keith came to Cirque after years in the field as one of our country’s leading interventionists. Keith currently sits on the Board of Directors for The Association of Intervention Specialists and the Board of Directors for the ADAC. Keith is a Certified Drug and Alcohol Therapist and Board Registered Interventionist. Keith after referring many clients to Cirque Lodge through the years retired from being an active interventionist and has taken a position with the staff that has allowed him to use his vast experience in working with families gleaned from his years in the field. “I wanted to work for a center where every employee believes they can make a difference.” Keith speaks nationally and internationally about the importance of a healthy treatment experience and the role of family support in that treatment experience and recovery.
