Description

During this session, participants will learn the characteristics of the “Stages of Change” and how to apply them to clients with SUD effectively for diagnostic and intervention purposes. Participants will understand and explore the degree to which diversity and cultural differences impact how Motivational Interviewing is used with clients at the Contemplation stage of change. This session will discuss the family-systems perspective of “homeostasis” as it relates to intervening effectively with families whose “Identified Patient” is at the Contemplation stage of change. Participants will also learn simple and effective approaches to implementing Motivational Interviewing skills with patients at the Contemplation stage of change.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is for participants to gain knowledge about Motivational Interviewing and how it can be used during the Contemplation Stage of Change.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe each of the 5 stages of the Stages of Change Model.

  • Describe Motivational Interviewing.

  • Identify 3 Motivational Interviewing techniques that can be used with clients.

  • Identify 2 ways diversity and cultural differences can influence the use of Motivational Interviewing.

Dr. Patrick Lockwood, MD

Dr. Lockwood has worked in addiction treatment services and varying levels of responsibility prior to during and after his doctoral education for approximately the last 10 years. He has published a paper on neuroscience informed treatment of trauma. He’s worked exclusively with addiction and comorbid/cooccurrence disorders at his current place of employment. Is presented on the opioid epidemic and the neuroscience of addiction for PCI Westlake centers on a number of occasions for professionals working in treatment. Dr. Lockwood has an upcoming book titled “The Fear Problem” (in press with mascot books) discussing the revolutionary psychology of our fear process and its consequences for human relationships. Dr. Lockwood has trained with influential figures in the field of addiction like John daily, from recovery happens counseling services in Sacramento California. He has been developing expertise in the integration of interpersonal neurobiology perspectives into known research-based treatment modalities (i.e, motivational interviewing) with clients in both individual and group settings. He is an avid consumer of research related to neuroscience, attachment, affective neuroscience (e.g., Jak Panksepp’s work), trauma, and evolutionary psychology— reading between 12-30 journal articles per week. Bringing all this experience Dr. Lockwood has joined the Oak Forest Recovery team this year as Clinical Director.
