Description

This workshop will discuss an integrative approach to working in a culturally responsive manner with Chicanx/Latinx populations and highlight tools related to “Browning” your counseling. An awareness of how traditional, individualistic concepts in mental health can be culturally incongruent for Chicanx/Latinx populations will be explored. Addressing and responding to issues of identity development, family dynamics, and spirituality in psychotherapy will be outlined.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe 3 ways to “brown” mental health concepts and interventions
  2. Identify 2 traditional concepts in mental health treatment that may be incongruent with Chicanx populations
  3. Describe how a focus on identity, family, and spirituality are key in responding to the Latinx population

Manuel X. Zamarripa

Manuel X. Zamarripa, Ph.D., LPC is the director and co-founder of the Institute of Chicana/o/x Psychology based in Austin, TX where he conducts community workshop practices as well as professional development training for educators and mental health professionals on issues related to Chicana/o/x wellness, cultural identity, and mental health from a Chicana/o/x framework. Manuel’s publications and presentations in psychology and education focus on Chicana/o/x well-being, racial responsiveness, cultural revitalization, social justice, and leadership.

Dr. Zamarripa is a licensed professional counselor and supervisor (Texas) and received his doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, his master’s in Counseling Psychology from Our Lady of the Lake University, and his bachelor’s in psychology from the University of Notre Dame.
