Description

This workshop is designed to educate clinicians with the tools and strategies necessary to empower children and adolescents to express themselves, increase self-confidence, and become more aware of their inner selves. Participants will learn the factors that impact the self-esteem of children and teens, including the school and home environment, social media, and the relationship with their peers. We will discuss the significance of self-care practices, mindfulness, and emotional regulation in maintaining a healthy self-esteem. We will outline techniques for effective communication that validate children’s feelings, encourage self-expression, and promote healthy self-talk. Participants will be introduced to tools and coping skills to help children and teenagers cope with setbacks, failures, and challenges and foster resilience and adaptability. Additionally, we will discuss the importance of setting achievable goals and celebrating incremental successes to boost self-confidence and motivation.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is for participants to develop an understanding of what influences self-esteem in children and toi equip participants with the tools and best practices for creating a supportive environment.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify three key external factors that have a strong impact on children’s and teen’s development.

  • Identify and describe two effective communication techniques that can be used with children and teens.

  • Describe two tools or coping skills that children can use when faced with setbacks, failures, and challenges.

  • Discuss the significance of self-care practices, mindfulness, and emotional regulation in maintaining a healthy self-esteem.

  • Explain the importance of setting achievable goals and celebrating incremental successes to boost self-confidence and motivation.

Saadia Z. Yunus is a licensed marriage and family therapist, EMDR trained trauma specialist, motivational speaker, and community leader. She has over 10 years of experience working with individuals, couples, families, and groups.

Saadia owns a private practice in Deer Park, NY, and offers online therapy to anyone in the states of New York and Florida. She serves on the Board of Trustees of Huntington Hospital, Chair of the advisory board of the Dolan Family Health Center and is the Social Media Director of the NY Marriage and Family Therapy Network. She serves on the board of The Barbershop Group, a national men’s mental health organization and serves on the board of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) based on Long Island. She is Co-founder and Chair of the Muslim Women of Long Island (MWLI).
