Description

Using the educator’s personal story as a case-study, this workshop will explore the characteristics, personality traits, recovery, and treatment challenges of high-functioning alcoholics and Substance Use Disorders. The “continuum” of alcohol and Substance Use Disorders will be discussed as well as diagnostic challenges. Additional treatment and prevention suggestions will be offered that are unique for this population. Evidence-based integrated treatment for dual diagnosis care will be denied and treatment strategies will be described. Finally, shame as a barrier to treatment for this population will be explored.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. List 4 unique characteristics and treatment challenges of high-functioning alcoholic and Substance Use Disorders
  2. Identify 2 challenges with the DSM-IV TR and DSM-V diagnostic criteria as they relate to high-functioning alcoholics and Substance Use Disorders
  3. Explain 3 treatment strategies for working with this client population
  4. Describe 1 evidence based integrated treatment approach for working with clients who have dual diagnoses
  5. Explain how shame is a barrier to this client population seeking treatment

Sarah Allen Benton, MS, LMHC, LPC, AADC is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor.
