Description

This session will focus on the use of gender-affirming hormones in the treatment/prevention of gender dysphoria. Specific emphasis will be placed on helping attendees develop a clearer understanding of the safety and efficacy of gender-affirming hormones, mechanisms for delivery, typical changes clients can expect when initiating gender-affirming hormones, and how to assess for clinically appropriate timing for initiating gender-affirming hormones. This information is particularly relevant to mental health providers to be better prepared to discuss gender-affirming medical care with their clients.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip attendees with the knowledge, understanding, and impact of gender-affirming hormones in treating and preventing gender dysphoria. Attendees will better understand the mechanisms of delivery and the timeline of expected changes when discussing gender-affirming hormone treatment with their clients.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify three types of gender-affirming hormones used in treating and preventing gender dysphoria.

  • Explain the mechanisms of delivery of gender-affirming hormone treatment.

  • Identify three effects of estrogen generally considered desirable, and three effects of testosterone generally considered desirable.

Johanna Olson-Kennedy, MD

Johanna Olson-Kennedy, MD is an Adolescent Medicine physician specializing in caring for gender nonconforming children and transgender youth. Board-certified in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Olson- Kennedy has been providing medical intervention for transgender youth and young adults including puberty suppression and cross-sex hormones for the past 17 years, and is considered a national expert in this area. She is the Medical Director of The Center for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, the largest transgender youth clinic in the United States. Dr. Olson-Kennedy is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine at USC.
