This session will assist clinicians in helping parents of transgender children assess when it is time to intervene with gender-affirming care, how to respond to a transgender child’s gender incongruence rather than waiting for externalized distress, how to address parents’ concerns with deciding to access gender-affirming care for their child, and the role of a clinician when parents/guardians disagree with initiating gender-affirming care for their transgender child.
- Counselors
- Addiction Counselors
- Social Workers
The educational goal of this workshop is to prepare attendees to help parents view gender-affirming care as a compassionate intervention that focuses on preventing distress and navigating the fear they may feel about deciding to seek gender-affirming care. Clinicians will also learn the skills necessary to work with parents who may disagree about medical interventions to prevent and treat gender dysphoria for their transgender child.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Explain two ways gender-affirming interventions are compassionate interventions.
-
Identify two problems with the distress model of care for the treatment of gender dysphoria.
-
Describe two or more interventions for working with parents who disagree with gender-affirming interventions for their transgender child.
