Description

This session de-stigmatizes common parental responses to having a transgender child. Empathic listening and communication skills will be provided to assist clinicians when supporting parents in responding to their child’s experiences of gender dysphoria. How a child’s age at disclosure, personality, and temperament, and a parent’s attachment to gender can impact the parental response will also be explored.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip attendees with the knowledge needed to encourage parents to consider their child’s age, temperament, personality, and their own relationship to their child’s gender when responding to their child’s gender identity.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify two or more empathic listening and empathic communication skills that can be used when supporting parents in responding to their child’s experiences of gender dysphoria.

  • Explain one way 1) a child’s age 2) a child’s temperament 3) a child’s personality and 4) a parent’s attachment to gender can impact a parent’s response to their child’s gender identity.

  • Identify two ways to help a parent develop an affirming response to their child’s gender identity disclosure.

Darlene Tando, LCSW

Darlene Tando, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, has a private practice in San Diego and has worked with transgender youth and adults since 2006. Darlene provides consultations and ongoing therapy for gender-expansive/transgender children, adolescents, and adults. Darlene is a proponent of the Informed Consent model and believes the individual is the “expert” on one’s gender identity. She believes it is her role to support the individual and family to assist in making one’s journey easier. Darlene is the author of the book “The Conscious Parent’s Guide to Gender Identity: A Mindful Approach to Embracing Your Child’s Authentic Self.”
