This session will build on the introduction of the history of gender-affirming care, exploring the historical roots of the psycho-pathologizing of the trans experience and body. Considerations of intersectional oppression will be explored, common theoretical approaches will be critiqued, and gender-affirming, antioppressive theories will be introduced.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to to increase attendees’ knowledge of the historical origins of pathologizing the trans experience and body to inform their development of an anti-oppressive, gender-affirming practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify two or more criticisms of theoretical approaches used in the clinical care of transgender clients.

  • Explain three or more ways to practice an anti-oppressive, intersectional theoretical approach to the clinical care of transgender clients.

Aydin Olson-Kennedy, DSW, LCSW

Dr. Aydin Olson-Kennedy (he/him) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than fifteen years of experience in delivering mental health support to transgender and non-binary communities. His therapeutic approach and educational methods are guided by anti-oppressive critical theories focusing on intersectionality, power dynamics, and oppressive systems. Dr. Olson-Kennedy specializes in providing therapeutic support and psychoeducation to parents, caregivers, and guardians of trans and non-binary individuals across all age groups. Central to his practice is exploring the experiences and impact of gender dysphoria outside the diagnostic framework of the DSM-V.
