This session will build on the introduction of the history of gender-affirming care, exploring the historical roots of the psycho-pathologizing of the trans experience and body. Considerations of intersectional oppression will be explored, common theoretical approaches will be critiqued, and gender-affirming, antioppressive theories will be introduced.

The educational goal of this workshop is to to increase attendees’ knowledge of the historical origins of pathologizing the trans experience and body to inform their development of an anti-oppressive, gender-affirming practice.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify two or more criticisms of theoretical approaches used in the clinical care of transgender clients.

Explain three or more ways to practice an anti-oppressive, intersectional theoretical approach to the clinical care of transgender clients.
