This session will introduce and define gender-related terms and concepts and explore the historical roots of the diagnosis of gender dysphoria in childhood.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to introduce attendees to the common terms and concepts related to providing gender-affirming care to their transgender clients and the historical development of gender-affirming care for minors.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define assigned sex at birth, gender expression, gender identity and sexual attraction.

  • Describe two or more key events in the historical development of the diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

  • Explain two differences between the diagnosis of gender dysphoria in childhood versus adolescence/adulthood.

Johanna Olson-Kennedy, MD

Johanna Olson-Kennedy, MD is an Adolescent Medicine physician specializing in the care of gender non-conforming children and transgender youth. Board-certified in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Olson-Kennedy has been providing medical intervention for transgender youth and young adults, including puberty suppression and cross-sex hormones, for the past 17 years and is considered a national expert in this area. She is the Medical Director of The Center for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, the largest transgender youth clinic in the United States. Dr. Olson-Kennedy is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine at USC.
