This module is twofold. First, the module is designed to prepare participants for their roles as professionals in the field. Areas of study include professional ethics and legal issues, record keeping, NCAA guidelines, and working as part of an interdisciplinary team or as a consultant with individual athletes, teams, and athletic organizations. Additionally, this Module is designed for participants to improve their career development, counseling, and skill-building techniques with youth, adolescents, young adults, and the adult athlete population. Participants have an opportunity to develop and practice strategies to enhance their effectiveness in counseling this unique cultural group. This module includes field experiences with the athlete population of their choice.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

List 3 strategies to create effective sports counseling service programs for athletes.

Write 2 tasks that will be completed to provide direct clinical work with the athlete populations including experiences in individual counseling and group work.

Define 3 advanced counseling and case conceptualization skills used with the athlete population.

List 3 counseling challenges presented by athletes, teams, and coaches.

Develop a referral process plan for athletes and identify 2 referral resources in your local context.

Practice professional functioning including roles, relationships with other athletic service providers and human service providers and professional organizations during role play.

List 3 ethical and legal issues related to the practice of sports counseling.
