The purpose of this module is to prepare you for dealing with death, loss, and grief situations you may encounter working with the athlete population. We will spend time reflecting on how people deal with death, loss, and grief and start to develop your skills in grief counseling and intervention. We will also examine some of the relevant research on grief counseling and intervention as well as the relevant research on death, loss and grief in sports. However, the major focus throughout this module will be on learning the practical skills of helping people who are dealing with death, grief and loss issues and learning assessment and treatment strategies used by counselors, educators, and other helping professionals who work with the athlete population to assist individuals, groups, and/or organizations (e.g., athletes, teams, athletic programs, schools, etc.).

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

List 2 conceptual frameworks and cognitive theories about death, loss and grief.

Identify 2 personal assumptions, biases, attitudes, or reactions to death, loss and grief.

Identify 2 potential loss events occurring throughout the lifespan, including non-death situations with the athlete population.

List 2 issues involving death, loss and grief with the athlete population from a theoretical, developmental, and cultural perspective.

Define 3 strategies for coping with death, loss and grief within the context of individual, cultural and athletic variations.

List 3 basic counseling skills that are used to work with bereaved individuals and the athlete population.
