This module provides participants with an overview of various life skills, including career development, study skills, goal setting, time management, health and wellness, values clarification, problem solving, decision making, and psychosocial development developed for the athlete population. A comprehensive framework for planning sports counseling service programs for athletes will be presented with particular emphasis on creating the appropriate context, developing external assets, teaching internal assets, and using evaluation and research to enhance service delivery. Participants will learn to develop a counseling philosophy that includes methods for teaching life skills to the athlete population.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify 2 key elements and constructs in prevention, intervention, enhancement, and resilience for developing sports counseling service programs for athletes.

Describe how to create an appropriate context to promote development with athletes.

List 3 critical aspects of the mentor/athlete relationship that demonstrate the ability to build working relationships.

Define 2 strategies to facilitate the transfer of selected life skills to other life domains.

Describe how to develop a needs assessment of a sports counseling service program that includes a written professional evaluation report.
