This module examines current counseling strategies used with members of sports teams at the youth, high school, college, and professional levels. Participants will explore current research in four main areas: (a) motivation and life skill development, (b) psychosocial development, (c) clinical issues, and (d) career maturity. This module will also allow participants to take a close look at who they are as individuals, to integrate the “counselor as a person” with the formalized knowledge gained by the module, and to understand how they relate to counseling diverse athletes.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify 2 significant issues related to the connection between athletic involvement and personal development.

Identify 3 clinical issues that athletes may experience at the youth, high school, college, or professional level.

List 3 intervention strategies for specific and diverse groups of athletes.

Define 2 issues related to identification with athletic roles and vulnerability to health endangering behaviors.
