The social atom is essentially a diagram of any aspect, family, or friends in a person’s network.
Diagramming the social atom provides a treatment map of the network of relationships. It can be a full process done on paper and shared in one-to-one or group therapy, or it can begin on paper then be put into role plays, sculptures, or full psychodramas. It can reflect relational constellations from the past, present or even a desired or feared future. Social atoms offer clinicians and clients a treatment plan that can be used as a worksheet or embodied through the empty chair, sculpturing or role play.
In this session, we’ll explore the following types of social atoms and learn how to draw, share, and move one into role play.
Types of Social Atoms

- • Family of Origin Family Mapping
- • Treatment Protocol (a social atom on entry into treatment, during therapy, and diagramming a desired future.)
