Description

The presentation will cover the importance of a shift in how clinicians speak about people with substance use disorder. This will include evidenced-based studies about how the language we, as professionals, use impacts the outcome of client care. Additionally, a history of addiction treatment and the previous ineffective confrontational models of addiction treatment will be discussed.

Educational Goal

Participants will explore the historical context of the substance abuse treatment field and how it has shaped person centered care.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify 3 examples of stigmatizing language involving substance use disorder that negatively impacts patient care
  2. Develop the vocabulary for alternative language to be used when treating substance use disorder
  3. Explain the history of addiction treatment and the origins of previous confrontational models of addiction treatment
  4. Implement 3 person-centered care interventions

John Puls

John began working with individuals suffering from substance use disorder and acute mental illness in 2013 in a support staff role. During this time, John completed his bachelor’s degree in social work from Florida Atlantic University while working as a case manager. John was accepted to the advanced standing master’s in social work program at Florida Atlantic University and is currently a licensed clinical social worker. While working as a primary therapist in a residential substance use disorder facility, John became a master’s level certified addiction professional (MCAP) through the Florida Certification Board. Additionally, John is passionate about educating social work students and serves as an adjunct professor at the School of Social Work at Florida Atlantic University. John owns a private psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and case management practice in Boca Raton, FL. John strongly believes in bridging the gap after residential treatment with community-based services.
