This presentation helps participants understand the SMART recovery approach to behavioral change, which includes: building and maintaining the motivation to change; coping with urges to use; managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in an effective way without addictive behaviors; and living a balanced, positive, and healthy life. It also addresses “stigmatizing the stigmatized” by helping participants evaluate their own entrenched views about abstinence so that counselors can be prepared to center therapy on the client without internal bias regarding where a client may stand with regard to abstinence. Interactive discussions about “feelings of giving up” when moving away from “abstinence only” programming will provide participants an opportunity to hear about their colleagues’ changing attitudes.”

1. To teach participants to incorporate the concept of SMART recovery using motivational interviewing techniques and frank discussion about initial and prolonged medication-assisted treatment.
2. To develop techniques for balancing pressures from
governmental goals to shorten treatment duration by making preferential decisions toward MAT, as opposed to client-centered and client-informed choices about treatment, harm reduction, and MAT.
3. Participants will learn about trends in recent data on
the long term efficacy of harm reduction techniques, a quick analysis of decriminalization initiatives and laws, as well as up to date budget forecasts from the federal government
In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Amedco LLC and The Global Exchange Conference (GXC). Amedco LLC is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Amedco maintains responsibility for this course. Social Workers completing this course receive GENERAL continuing education credits.
