Description

This presentation will explore equine therapy as a tool to use with clients struggling with substance use disorders. Not only can working with horses help clients to regulate the mind and body, it can also help them establish new patterns for healthy behavior with themselves and in relationships with others. Using principles taught by Natural Lifemanship, participants will learn how to help clients heal from trauma through transformative relationships.

  1. Identify 3 ways equine therapy help those with SUDs
  2. Name 4 components of healthy relationships addressed by equine therapy
  3. Explain how skills learned with horses translate to relationships with themselves and others

Joanna Baird

Joanna Baird grew up in West Virginia on a horse farm. She attended Shepherd University and received bachelor’s degrees in Psychology, Biology, and History, before moving to Texas to work for MD Anderson cancer research center in preclinical and epigenetic research. She is currently employed by The Last Resort Recovery in Austin, Texas, where she is the Director of Equine Therapy Services, in addition to other duties running the facility and working with clients and their families.
