Supervision and group work are heavily researched areas in the counseling profession, yet little is known specifically about the individual site supervision of group work. This presentation will provide participants with a review of best practices in supervision and group work, salient literature, and a recent research study to help inform their supervision. Additionally, participants will learn where to start when setting up supervision for group work at their prospective sites.

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge about the supervision of group work.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe two or more important pieces of research pertaining to the supervision of group work.

  • Identify three or more best practices for the supervision of group work.

  • Explain the steps needed to set up successful supervision.

  • Identify two or more key implications about the supervision of group work that can be applied in practice.

Staci Tessmer, M.A., LPCC-S, NCC, BC-TMH

Staci Tessmer is an independently licensed counselor with a supervisory designation and maintains her NCC and BC-TMH credentials. She has been practicing in the counseling field for over a decade and has held a variety of clinical, supervisory, and administrative roles. Specifically, the presenter has supervised groups for eight years, including counselor trainees who are conducting groups as a part of their practicum and/or internship experience. Additionally, she has held many leadership roles within counseling organizations. She has presented at numerous local, state, national, and international counseling conferences on a variety of counseling and supervision topics, including the supervision of group work. The presenter has been published in peer reviewed journals and conducted a qualitative research study on counseling site supervisors experience of and preparation for the individual supervision of group work.
