This workshop will provide an introduction to basic principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) with an emphasis on compassionate behavior change strategies in promotion of dignity and autonomy. Attendees will review exemplars and non-exemplars of compassionate and participatory-based ABA programming, identifying key characteristics of person-centered supports. We will also discuss ABA as related to language development for young learners medically diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge of how the principles of ABA can be implemented in support of socially significant, person-centered behavior change, including in language development.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify three characteristics of compassionate behavior analytic programming.

Explain at least two ways to engage in environmental support towards language development for learners diagnosed with ASD.
