Description

Motivational Interviewing (MI) has been an effective evidence-based toolkit that can be applied to a diverse population with various needs. The spirit of MI consisting of mutual respect and collaboration can help resolve ambivalence and enhance an individual’s motivation to make positive life changes. This presentation will review the basic foundational concepts of MI for client success. This presentation will provide a step-by-step guide to assist clinicians with helping clients engage in change. This presentation will also discuss ways to navigate potential roadblocks for clients struggling to engage in change.

Fredrick Dombrowski is the President of the American Mental Health Counselors Association. He has worked as a clinician in co-occurring disorders since 1998. Dr. Dombrowski specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. He has experience as a supervisor and director for multiple inpatient, outpatient, and forensic treatment programs. As an educator, Dr. Dombrowski is focused on experiential learning through a perspective of cultural humility and an equitable approach to clinical care. As a supervisor, Dr. Dombrowski remains focused on improving clinical care through supervision dedicated to evidence-based practices.
