Description

The goal of the presentation is to educate providers on navigating various social media platforms in order to educate adolescents and their families about their potential negative mental health effects. Providers will learn how social media directly influences teenagers and their thought processes, which has been shown to cause increased anxiety. Providers will learn how to communicate with teenagers and their families about using social media appropriately which can increase positive relationships within the family and decrease anxiety.

Educational Goal

Participants will gain increased competency in working with teenagers and their families on anxiety caused and exacerbated by social media.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. List 4 social media platforms and their general use.

2. Identify 3 negative effects social media has on teenage anxiety

3. Apply 3 techniques to improve communication and interpersonal relationships between parents and their teenagers related to social media.

Natasha Smith was born and raised in Opelousas, LA. She received her Bachelors of Science degree in Liberal Arts with a major in Psychology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, followed by a Masters of Social Work degree from the Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La. Natasha is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with the Louisiana Board of Social Work Examiners. Natasha specializes in the treatment of Anxiety Disorders as a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional and a Certified Telemental Health Professional. Natasha has worked in the child welfare sector, as well being a Clinical Director and Supervisor.
