Description

There are more people with ADHD and autism in the queer community than in the general population. Therefore, understanding this intersection of queer and neurodivergent identity is vital to counseling LGBTGEQIAP+ clients. Unfortunately, current clinical norms pathologize neurodivergence and discourage authenticity. This presentation seeks to give therapists the skills to work effectively with queer neurodivergent clients from the perspective of queer neurodivergent therapists.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase understanding of neurodivergent affirming therapy.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define neurodivergent affirming therapy.

  • Articulate at least three parallels between neurodivergent and queer affirming practice.

  • Identify two or more strategies that can be implemented in practice to affirm queer neurodivergent clients.

Gene N. Dockery, PhD, LPCC, LMHC, NCC

Dr. Gene Dockery (they/them) is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Seattle University. They earned their MA in Counseling at East Tennessee State University and their PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at Ohio University. Gene’s research focuses on queer and trans liberation, disability justice, and advocacy. They own a small telehealth private practice where their clinical specialty is queer neurodivergence, the intersection of nonnormative genders/sexualities and neurological differences. Gene is also the Public Policy Committee Chairperson for the Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities and the Vice Chairperson of the Association of Specialists in Group Work Research Committee

Amber Bloom, MA, LPC-S

Amber Bloom is queer and neurodivergent and raising two children who are also queer and neurodivergent. She is a Ph.D. Candidate at Texas Christian University and has worked as a mental health counselor since 2011.
