This workshop is an engaging exploration of the treatment of addictions through a trauma framework. During this session, our panel of experts, Ms. Shara Turner, Dr. Joanne Barron, and Dr. Lynne Friedman-Gell will re-conceptualize the identification and treatment of process addictions as maladaptive coping mechanisms in the aftermath of trauma with an emphasis on empowerment, self-regulation and sustainable structural change in treatment.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge of trauma- informed addiction treatment.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define trauma and identify how addiction is often a maladaptive coping mechanism for trauma.

  • Define the phase-based model for trauma treatment.

  • Name at least three components of trauma-informed care.

  • Identify and discuss neuroplasticity and explain its role in healing from trauma.

  • Define Habit Loop and discuss two ways it applies to process addictions.

Shara Turner

Shara Turner, LPC, MSC, NCC, EAGALA, is the Clinical Director at Sabino Recovery. She is a trauma survivor and advocates for treating all individuals through a lens of trauma. Ms. Turner’s extensive personal and professional experience gives her the knowledge and passion to train, educate, and treat every individual she encounters. Since her induction to Sabino in 2019, Ms. Turner has developed a comprehensive, individualized, and sophisticated program that has seen incredible success in changing the lives of those affected by trauma.

Ms. Turner brings a unique perspective and skill set to Sabino Recovery. She has spent the last nine years in public health working with individuals who have been dual-diagnosed with various substance use and mental health disorders, complex trauma, and extreme environmental and social issues. The challenges faced in this arena have given her a strong practice base in diagnosis, treatment, and case management. In addition to attaining the licensed professional counselor certification, Ms. Turner is certified by Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (Eagala) and is versed in various therapeutic modalities, including DBT, CPT, and CBT. Ms. Turner’s passion lies in removing the stigma of diagnosis and treating the individual, utilizing an integrative and holistic approach.

Dr. Joanne Barron

Dr. Joanne Barron, Ph.D., is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in Sherman Oaks, California. She is co-owner of Trauma and Beyond Psychological Center in Sherman Oaks, which provides outpatient and intensive outpatient care for clients with trauma and related disorders. Dr. Barron holds a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology and is certified as an EMDR Therapist Neuro Affective Relational Model (NARM ) master practitioner, and is trained in the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM), Relational Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Affect Regulation, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Right Brain Psychotherapy. Dr. Barron has over 40 years of experience in addictions and mental health and is passionate about treating patients with complex developmental trauma. As co-founder of Trauma and Beyond Psychological Center and Dr. Lynne Friedman-Gell, she has developed an integrative approach for treating developmental and intergenerational trauma, combining approaches for incorporating the mind, body, and emotions.

Dr. Lynne Friedman-Gell

Lynne Friedman-Gell, Ph.D., is the Co-Owner and Co-CEO of Trauma and Beyond Psychological Center, and Athena House Supportive Living in Los Angeles, CA. Lynne is the co-author of the Intergenerational Trauma Workbook, and is a clinical psychologist with a private practice in Sherman Oaks, CA. Dr. Lynne and Dr. Joanne Barron developed an integrative model for use in their PHP and IOP programs utilizing multimodal approach for treating complex and intergenerational trauma, and early developmental deficits for post trauma growth. Lynne specializes in working with PTSD, complex PTSD, anxiety, mood disorders, addiction,  and personality disorders. Lynne is certified in EMDR, is a Master level NARM therapist (NeuroAffective Relational Model of Psychology), trained in the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM) and utilizes an integration of psychodynamic therapy, somatic experiencing, psychobiology, and mindfulness in her clinical practice.  Lynne is a member of the Dr. Allan Schore Right Brain Psychotherapy Institute focusing on advancements in Affect Regulation, Attachment theory and neuroscience. Lynne is a certified Trauma Professional through IATP. Lynne was clinical supervisor and clinical director over a six-year period at Insight Treatment Program. Lynne received her MA and Ph.D. from the California School of Professional Psychology, completed two years of advanced training in psychoanalytic-psychodynamic psychotherapy at Wright Institute Los Angeles, and trained at the Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorders Program. Lynne is certified in addiction studies since 1996.
