Description

The first part of this two-part workshop, presented by Ms. Turner, will explore treating family trauma through safety, processing. and reconnection. Participants will receive an overview of complex trauma symptomatology focusing on the continuum of dissociation and dissociative disorders. Participants will gain skills to effectively treat clients facing these issues. Dr. Bader will present the second part of the workshop, which will focus on teaching clinical skills and strategies that can be used when working with women in recovery. Dr. Bader will discuss a variety of strategies to help clients improve trust and communication skills, as well as healthy coping skills clients can use as an alternative to substances when facing distress.

Educational Goal

Participants will gain competency in trauma and family systems and enhance their clinical skillset when
working with women in recovery.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define complex trauma symptomatology.

  • Describe 2 ways complex trauma impacts the development and integration of one’s psyche.

  • Describe the 3 main components of working with families and trauma.

  • Identify 3 coping skills women can use instead of turning to drugs and alcohol to escape.

  • Explain how therapy can improve a client’s ability to communicate with the people around them.

  • Discuss strategies to help clients increase their ability to trust other people, increase mindfulness, and increase optimism.

Shara Turner

Ms. Turner has a unique perspective and skill set as she has spent the last nine years in public health working with individuals diagnosed with various substance use and mental health disorders, complex trauma, and extreme environmental and social inadequacies. The challenges faced in this arena have provided her with a strong base of practice in diagnosis, treatment, and case management. The breadth and depth of her experience extend to crisis counseling, utilization management, and coordinator of a level I psychiatric facility. Most recently, Ms. Turner served as lead therapist and clinical supervisor of an 18-bed residential facility. At the helm of this facility, she developed and led an intensive outpatient equine program that markedly decreased recidivism to level I hospitalizations over a six-month period. She is currently the Clinical Director at Sabino Recovery. In addition to being a Licensed Professional Counselor, Ms. Turner is certified by the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (Eagala) and versed in various therapeutic modalities, including DBT, CPT, and CBT. Ms. Turner’s passion lies in removing the stigma of diagnosis and treating the individual, utilizing an integrative and holistic approach.

Dr. LaTisha L. Bader

Dr. Bader has worked in the mental health and addiction field for over 19 years. She graduated from the University of North Texas in 2007 with a PhD in Counseling Psychology and specialization in sport psychology. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship in Chemical Dependency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She is a Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Addiction Counselor, and Certified Mental Performance Consultant who works with elite athletes and teams. Dr. Bader has worked in a variety of treatment settings including residential, outpatient, private practice, and Native American health care. She spends time in the sports environment in collegiate athletic departments, working with professional teams and Olympic athletes. She currently complements the multi-disciplinary team at Women’s Recovery by serving as the Chief Clinical Officer, advancing treatment for women. In addition, she maintains a private practice offering counseling, consultation, educational presentations, and sport psychology services. She authored a chapter in the evidenced based book, Cannabis in Medicine. She also serves on the Speakers Bureau for the National Marijuana Initiative as a cannabis subject matter expert on emerging research, addiction and treatment.
