Description

This presentation will examine the added stress of racial microaggressions for clinicians of color. It will provide a general overview of racial microaggressions, implications for the work of clinicians, a preview into the relationship between racial microaggressions and burnout, and conclude with tips/strategies to navigate racial microaggressions.

Educational Goals

Participants will gain an understanding of racial microaggressions, the relationship to burnout, and related tips/ strategies.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe 3 characteristics and 5-6 types of racial microaggressions.
  2. Explain 2-3 ways racial microaggressions negatively impact clinicians of color.
  3. Identify 5-7 strategies that disarm or eradicate racial microaggressions.

Dr. PaQuita R. Pullen

Dr. PaQuita R. Pullen is the owner of Ubuntu Counseling & Wellness. She is a Nashville/Middle TN native. She completed her undergraduate studies at Middle Tennessee State University and earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Trevecca Nazarene University in 2014. In May of 2022, she graduated with her Ph.D. in Clinical Counseling: Teaching and Supervision. She is also a board-certified counselor through NBCC and a PREPARE/ENRICH Facilitator. In 2019, she attained her LPCMHSP license for the state of Tennessee.

In addition to her clinical mental health training, she is a Registered Yoga Instructor (RYT-200). PaQuita has worked in several clinical mental health settings, including residential treatment facilities, agencies, and school-based and private practices. She has served children, adolescents, adults, and the geriatric population. Additionally, PaQuita has worked in crisis care serving individuals experiencing active suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, active psychosis, and fleeing domestic violence. She is skilled in working with individuals, couples, and groups. PaQuita strives to remind each client that they matter and are worthy of compassion. She is committed to serving clients with culturally competent, developmentally appropriate, and ethical care. PaQuita understands that life can be difficult to manage, but she encourages clients to access their power and resources to achieve change and wellbeing. PaQuita hopes that all of her clients have an authentic experience in counseling rooted in connectedness and genuineness.
