This presentation aims to provide attendees with a model to help them make ethical decisions when faced with various ethical dilemmas in the counseling field. The presentation will review the current data on ethical violations reported in two states, the current ethical codes of the American Counseling Association, and then how to apply ethical models to real-life examples of ethical dilemmas a counselor may face in counseling.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify all 9 sections of the ACA Code of Ethics and their components
  2. Explain all stages of at least one ethical decision-making model
  3. Apply one ethical decision-making model to a real-life example of an ethical dilemma

Dr. Andrew M. Burck

Dr. Burck is an Associate Professor at Marshall University. He graduated from the University of Toledo with his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision and his M.Ed. in Community Counseling from Kent State University. Dr. Burck has published articles in the field of assessment and addictions and has presented at various state, regional, and national conferences. His research interests include the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-3, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2, ethical issues of rural counselors, and wellness. Dr. Burck is a member of the American Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling, and Chi Sigma Iota (CSI). He is a faculty advisor to the Marshall University chapter of CSI. Dr. Burck was the former Member at Large (Publications) for AARC (a division of ACA). Dr. Burck is the treasurer for AARC.
