This session will explain how the law serves as a social determinant of health. The overall health needs of individuals are left unmet without just and fairly implemented legal policies and affordable and adequate legal representation. As such, the law is the most powerful means of determining individual health outcomes. Presenters will explain the concept of social determinants of health and describe specific casework in which the law served to stabilize housing, gain access to public benefits and ensure the safety of individuals. Upon the completion of this session, attendees should be able to identify legal means of serving individuals in need of assistance and how to access legal sources to achieve that end.

- At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
Define social determinants of health.
Identify how the law directs social determinants of health and overall health outcomes.
Analyze specific examples of how the law redirects social determinants of health to the benefit of both patients and healthcare providers.
How the Law Serves as a Social Determinant of Health, Course #4022, is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program to be offered by NJ Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies (NJAMHAA) as an individual course. Individual courses, not providers, are approved at the course level. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit.
