Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a practical, evidenced-based communication and counseling style for drawing out clients’ own motivation and commitment for positive change. Originally developed in the drug and alcohol field, over 300 clinical trials demonstrate the efficacy of MI across a range of populations and target behaviors. In particular, MI has been shown to be especially effective in brief conversations and for individuals not ready or unsure about change. This MI introductory workshop will provide participants an overview of the theory, principles, skills, and current advances in MI. Participants will be guided through a series of learning experiences and activities to initiate the on-going development of MI proficiency. If you appreciate learning that is enjoyable, experiential, engaging, practical, memorable, and guided by a variety of multi-modal/multi-sensory teaching approaches, this MI training is for you.

Participants are expected to gain competency in Motivational Interviewing, an evidence-based technique.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- List 4 key ingredients of the guiding philosophy of Motivational Interviewing (MI)
- Identify the 5 foundational communication skills of MI from demonstrations and video examples
- Name 2 MI strategies for eliciting and exploring clients’ own reasons for change in role-play practice exercises
- Describe the 4 processes of MI for navigating clinical conversations in the direction of client change goals
- Identify one key issue for incorporating the primary skills and strategies of MI into clinical practice
This program has been approved for 3.0 CE clock hours in Diagnosis by the Louisiana Counseling Association as authorized by the Louisiana Professional Counselor Licensing Board of Examiners.
Course meets the qualifications for hours of continuing education credit for LPCCs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. TPN.health is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LPCCs.
