Description

Using the lessons learned in the medical field, the value of boundaries in the workplace will be explored in this presentation. The examples gleaned from the crucial power differential in the medical field apply at all levels of ethical workplaces. Included in this presentation will be an exploration of the definition of boundaries, the definition of boundary transgressions and the types that can occur in the workplace. In addition, there will be a discussion of the importance of healthy boundaries in maintaining a healthy workplace. The importance of understanding roles in the workplace and stress management will be discussed. Aspects of self-care that are crucial to the conscious maintenance of boundaries will be discussed and time will be reserved for questions regarding specific contexts, including insights learn from fellow participants.

Educational Goal

Increase understanding of the ethical importance of healthy boundaries and self-care.

Learning Objectives
  1. Describe the definition of boundaries.
  2. Describe the importance of boundary crossings and identify at least three types.
  3. Identify the impact of stress, personality style and understanding of boundaries in not only identifying
    unhealthy boundaries in the workplace but also defining healthy ones.
  4. Identify at least three resources and tools for self-care, personally and in the workplace, to minimize
    stress and other risk factors for boundary transgressions.

Dr. Jes Montgomery, MD

Dr. Montgomery’s private practice has focused on general psychiatry and addiction medicine, with emphasis on co-occurring disorders, sexual addiction, sexual trauma and monitoring recovering physicians. He has a special interest in using the model of Grief and Loss as an often over-looked specific component of recovery from addictions, trauma and mental illness. He has continued a therapeutic psychopharmacology and therapy practice throughout his career.

Dr. Montgomery has presented extensively on the issues of Boundary Violations since he began working with Santé Center in 2003, contributing to the Boundaries Course at Pine Grove, also to State Medical Boards and other regulatory agency meetings and at ASAM, APA, FSPHP and the International Conference on Physician Wellness (AMA, BMA and CMA sponsored) on numerous elements of boundary violation, treatment and remediation, and re-entry into practice. Dr. Montgomery co-authored with Dr. R. Dean White, “The Ethical Risks of Professional Boundaries: When to Say Whoa and When to Say Go”, a handbook on
Boundaries for professionals at all levels.
