Description

Although new HIV infections in the US are down two-thirds from the height of the epidemic, and the annual number of newly diagnosed people in the US is down 7% from 2017 to 2021, over 36,000 people were diagnosed with HIV in 2021 in the US and dependent areas. Mental health providers need to understand risk factors, prevention strategies, the psychosocial issues and how to support HIV+ individuals and their families. In this class we will focus on prevention, signs and symptoms, testing, stages of infection, legal issues, social and cultural issues, preparing youth for loss of a parent from HIV, mental health issues and resources.
