Description

Cannabis-Induced Psychosis (CIP) is a generally underdiagnosed and misunderstood disorder. Often, treatment tends to focus on mental health or addiction independently. However, treatment must include a dual approach to properly treat this disorder. This presentation will provide a general overview of CIP symptoms and treatment and help those providing recommendations and interventions understand what to look for and assess.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge about assessing and treating CIP.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify three warning signs of a potential cannabis-induced psychosis patient

  • Explain two or more factors a clinician should know to make appropriate referrals for clients struggling with potential CIP.

  • Compare cannabis intoxication, CIP, and schizophrenia spectrum by describing two or more shared characteristics and at least one unique characteristic of each.

Samantha Meyer, Ph.D.

Dr. Samantha Meyer received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2013. She graduated from Palo Alto University with her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2020. Dr. Meyer began her clinical work at an outpatient, intensive case management clinic in San Francisco, providing group and individual treatment to homeless and low-income individuals with serious mental illness and substance use disorders. This work inspired a passion for helping individuals struggling with dual diagnoses. Dr. Meyer has worked with children, adolescents, and adults helping them process and cope with various issues, including trauma and adjustment disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, serious mental illness, relational issues, and more. She takes a trauma-informed, client-centered approach to therapy while being mindful of cultural identity. In her spare time, Samantha enjoys baking, cooking, playing with her dogs, buying new houseplants, and listening to true crime podcasts.
