Description

Chronic suicidal ideation, intent, and planning is a risk factor for suicide and is difficult for professionals to manage as it often produces intense feelings of fear for the professional. Understanding the purpose behind the constant suicidal wish and being able to empathize while instilling hope can save a life. Understanding the unique challenges of safety planning with chronic suicidality and learning creative alternatives to hospitalization; will increase your ability to provide treatment at the correct level of care. Real clinical examples, research, and key clinical practices will be presented to help you improve your ability to work with an individual with chronic suicidality.

Educational Goal

Participants will gain competency in assessing for and managing chronic suicidality.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify 3 reasons individuals have chronic suicidal thoughts/intent
  2. Assess for chronic suicidal risk in 3 settings
  3. Identify when hospitalization is necessary
  4. List 2 skills to manage our own emotions when our patients want to die
  5. Differentiate between acute and chronic suicidality
  6. List 3 risk management strategies

Anna Lieber

Anna Lieber (she/hers) has over 20 years of experience in behavioral health in direct client care, program development, and administration. She is a Qualified Clinical Supervisor and UAMFT-approved supervisor. Prior to starting at Westminster College, Anna was the Chief Clinical Officer for Salt Lake Behavioral Health, where she oversaw all inpatient and outpatient clinical programming. Anna has worked in numerous treatment settings throughout Utah and Florida. Anna is passionate about behavioral health and the mental health counseling field and uses her drive to enhance the mental health profession by giving back through service. Anna is the President of the Utah Mental Health Counselors Association, a board member of the Utah Crime Victim Reparations and Assistance Board, and provides numerous trainings to therapists and medical providers. Anna is a Nationally Certified Counselor and member of the NBCC, American Association of Suicidology, AMHCA, and LGBTQ+ Affirmative Therapist Guild of Utah. Anna has extensive experience in the treatment and program development for many disorders and populations, including developmental trauma, military issues, dual-diagnosis, addiction, psychosis, PTSD/trauma, anxiety, mood, personality, LGBTQIA+, and suicidality. Anna’s clinical interests include chronic suicidal behaviors, personality disorders, trauma/PTSD, obsessive-compulsive disorders, suicide prevention, and supervision. Outside of work, Anna loves to read all genres, play/listen to music, and enjoy time outdoors. Anna spends most of her time working, reading, cooking, and camping (when it’s not winter). Her spouse and dogs enjoy camping and cooking but miss her when she works too much.
