Description

This workshop will discuss how mental health and addiction counselors can best help families who have been affected by addiction. We will build on a discussion around addiction, teaching Helpers how to recognize the effects of addiction on the family system, the role they play in addiction recovery, and how to help them navigate the effects of addiction by providing general knowledge and resources.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge about addiction and supporting families affected by addiction.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify 3 or more signs of substance misuse/abuse and chemical dependency.

  • Define codependency, enabling and detachment.

  • Identify at least 2 interventions and 2 supports that can be used with family members of individuals struggling with substances.

  • Explain when an intervention is necessary.

  • Identify 2 or more ethical dilemmas that may arise when working with families affected by addiction and discuss how they should be addressed.

Social Workers

Anna Juarez, PLPC

Anna Juarez, PLPC, is a Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor in Louisiana working in private practice with Counseling and Recovery Guidance in Lafayette. She holds a master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Louisiana Lafayette. She also has experience working in an inpatient behavioral health hospital setting and a local recovery center. She sees individual clients ages 13+, including those facing addiction, as well as their family members and individuals suffering the effects of trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and life transitions. She takes an eclectic approach to counseling, tailoring various techniques and modalities to the needs of each client. She is also EMDR trained, as most of her practice is trauma-focused, and acknowledges that trauma and addiction often go hand-in-hand. As a mental health counselor, her goal is to provide a space that allows clients to feel safe to be their most vulnerable and authentic selves, hoping to allow them to live a life of freedom and fulfillment.

Jessica Gibson, LPC-S

Jessica Gibson, LPC-S, holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and is a licensed counselor in Louisiana and Texas. She also possesses a certification in Counseling Supervision in the state of Louisiana. Jessica is passionate about and experienced in working with families affected by addiction and complex trauma, and has gained knowledge in substance abuse recovery, codependency, 12-step recovery, interventions, and treatment placement. She is an advocate for mental health and substance abuse awareness, with a passion for treating family systems.

She has shifted her practice significantly to a mostly experiential model, helping people heal from traumatic experiences, and offers Experiential/EMDR therapy intensives both in the office and offsite. She uses EMDR, psychodrama techniques, sand tray, mindfulness, and other creative modalities. Jessica is a co-owner of Counseling and Recovery Guidance in Lafayette, LA.

In addition to her clinical and supervisory roles, Jess maintains:
Certified First Responder Counselor (CFRC)
Certified in EMDR and Experiential Therapy (CET1)
Completed the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) training for first responders.
Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) for the Department of Transportation
Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP), and holds the position of Vice President for the Louisiana Chapter of Employee Assistance Professionals (LA-EAPA)

Additionally, Jessica offers Substance Use Disorder assessments and frequently works with various professionals and treatment centers to consult about family programming. She is also a Continuing Education presenter and a supervisor for PLPC’s needing clinical consultation.
