This workshop is designed to empower peer support specialists and community health workers with the knowledge and tools necessary to set healthy boundaries and prevent burnout, ensuring they can continue to provide high-quality care to their communities while maintaining their own well-being.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge about healthy boundaries and burnout and to learn strategies for improving self-care, stress management, and well-being.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the concept and importance of healthy boundaries.

  • Identify 2 signs or symptoms of burnout.

  • Describe a strategy to establish and maintain healthy boundaries.

  • Name 2 techniques for self-care and stress management.

  • Create a personal action plan for maintaining well-being.

Steven J. Henry, MSJ, CPSS, CHW

Steve Henry is a native Detroiter who currently works at the American Heart Association as an Innovatively Developed Director. In a previous role as senior program Development Manager at the American Heart Association, he developed a national hypertension/high blood pressure certification program to advance the education and engagement of Community Health Workers. He also provided leadership to plan and operate a financially responsible, culturally sensitive, and mission-driven public health program model.

Prior to his role at the American Heart Association, Steve has had roles as Principal Life Coach (Relentless Consulting Group), Community Organizing Consultant (Connect 313), and Employee Engagement and Development Manager (Detroit Health Department).  He also held the role of Coordinator of Peer Recovery Support Services at Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Steve holds a Master of Arts in Social Justice from Marygrove College and a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Family and Youth Studies from Central Michigan University. Steve was certified as a Michigan Peer Support Specialist in 2016, certified as a community health worker in 2017, and certified as a Georgia Peer Support Specialist in 2024.
