This training is intended to provide an overview of Substance Use Disorder in people with Intellectual Disabilities. The trainer will identify biological, psychological, social, and family vulnerabilities for those with intellectual disabilities. The trainer will provide details related to polypharmacy, including identification and prevention.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase understanding of Substance Use Disorder in those with intellectual disabilities, and their specific vulnerabilities.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the DSM-5’s significance in providing operational definitions of how IDD, MI, and substance abuse may occur at the same time.

  • Discuss the relationship between Polypharmacy and Polysubstance Abuse

  • Identify at least five signs of Polypharmacy

Melissa Cheplic, MPH, NADD-DDS

Melissa is a Senior Training and Consultation Specialist at The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities at Rutgers Medical School – New Jersey’s University Center for Excellence in Development Disabilities. Melissa develops and delivers training and technical assistance to community provider and state agencies, building workforce capacity in behavior and mental health, and identifying strategies to coordinate behavioral health interventions with clinical supports. Melissa holds a master’s degree from the Rutgers School of Public Health.

A NADD certified clinician, she has developed nationally recognized curricula and presented at numerous conferences on Positive Behavior Support, mental health, crisis prevention, emergency preparedness and accessibility, and workforce development. She coauthored the training manual, “Mental Health Approaches to Intellectual/Developmental Disability” and is featured in “The Good Stuff: Practical Positive Supports for People with IDD and Mental Illness.” Melissa is earning a DrPH at Rutgers school of public health, concentrating on Leadership, Practice, and Research.
