Description

This training is intended to enrich the clinical and service capacity of behavioral health providers in treating persons with IDD/MH dual diagnosis. An IDD/MH dual diagnosis refers to individuals with an intellectual/developmental disability (IDD) who concurrently experience a mental health condition. This session will cover diagnosis, assessment, and intervention.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Complete a psychotherapy assessment and develop a plan for psychotherapeutic intervention.

  • Identify three critical elements to consider when contemplating the use of psychopharmacological intervention.

  • Discuss four common causes of cognitive/behavioral Intensification/emergence of symptoms like those seen in primary mental health disorders.

Uzama Price, Ed.D., NADD-DDS, BCBA

Dr. Uzama Price is a board-certified behavior analyst and a scholar-practitioner. She has over 17 years of experience working in the behavioral health field, serving children and adults diagnosed with intellectual disabilities and co-occurring mental illness in North Carolina. Originally from Jamaica, she has lived in the United States for over 30 years. Her educational background includes a doctorate in education and post-doctoral work in psychology (applied analysis). More recently, she started yet another journey in clinical mental health counseling at Liberty University. Uzama spent three years as a research associate on the Developing Gratitude Study at the University of North Carolina- Greensboro. She develops training content to support workforce development efforts in Canada, Jamaica, North Carolina, and the United States. Sexual health promotion supported decision making, cultural awareness, criminal justice & intellectual disability, trauma, and intellectual disability. These are some of the trainings she has developed to support direct support professionals. In December 2021, she won the NADD Member of the Year Award. In May 2023, she won the Center for START Services Partner of the Year Award at their National Training Institute in Austin, Texas. She is the co-chair of the specialist committee for the NADD and an advisory council member for Elevatus Training, the premier provider of educational content to support sexuality education for the IDD population. She is an advocate for children and their families. She and co-author Dr. Dan Baker published The Good Stuff- Practical Positive Supports for People with Intellectual Disabilities & Co-occurring Mental Illness in 2023.
