Description
This workshop is designed for practitioners interested in gaining competence and confidence in using motivational interviewing (MI) through instruction, coaching, and deliberate practice. After a two-day introductory immersion into MI principles and techniques, participants will broaden and deepen their skills through ongoing practice and subsequent coaching and training. Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to identify their areas of strengths and stretches regarding MI skills and application.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to gain competence and confidence in the use of motivational interviewing.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain four ways to respond to Change Talk.

  • Identify two strengths of your motivational interviewing practice.

  • Identify two areas for improvement for your motivational interviewing practice.

Michael McGuire, LCSW, LMFT, LCAS, CCS, MINT Member

Michael McGuire is employed by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work as a Clinical Assistant Professor, the Director of the Substance Use and Addiction Specialty program, and lead trainer for a state-funded workforce development initiative. He is licensed as a Clinical Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, and Clinical Addictions Specialist, and is a credentialed supervisor and MINT Trainer. Michael offers training and implementation consultation on evidence-based practices with a particular focus on motivational interviewing, SBIRT, and family systems. Additional areas of interest include adolescent and family development, problematic substance use and addiction, experiential learning, military-involved families, Feedback Informed Treatment, clinical supervision, ethics, and workforce development. Michael is the author of three unwritten books and was recently voted the most interesting and humble person in the galaxy.

Ali Hall, JD, MINT Certified Trainer, MINT Member

Ali Hall is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), a MINT Certified Trainer, and an independent consultant and trainer. Ali currently serves on the MINT Board of Directors, focusing on professional skill development for MI practitioners and trainers. Ali served as a Lead Trainer for the International MINT Training for New Trainers (TNT) in Warsaw (2019), New Orleans (2018) and Berlin (2015), co-trainer in Atlanta (2014) and provided training team support in Fort Wayne (2012) and Sheffield (2011).

Ali has designed and facilitated thousands of Motivational Interviewing (MI) workshops for behavioral health and substance use recovery providers, mental health practitioners, health care providers, child and family services providers, wraparound providers, senior service providers, criminal justice professionals. psychologists, and psychiatrists, and provides training for trainers in evidence-based practices. Ali regularly provides skill development coaching for interdisciplinary health provider teams. Ali is the co-developer of the Motivational Interviewing Competency Assessment (MICA), a coding and coaching tool for MI skill improvement, and the co-author of the book Motivational Interviewing for Mental Health Clinicians: A Toolkit for Skill Development (2021).
