The presenter will discuss reducing liability, exposure, and vulnerability in the practice and supervision of marriage and family therapy. Such issues as confidentiality, business practices, appropriate use of hierarchical supervisory power, contracting, screening and vetting of potential interns or supervisees, insurance fraud, avoiding triangulation in couple therapy and court-related cases, managing countertransference, and socialization of supervisees into MFT theory and legal and ethical issues will be discussed. Ethical vignettes will be utilized for critical thinking and problem-solving. A Q and A period will be included.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Reducing liability, vulnerability, and exposure by increasing legal and ethical decision-making skills by MFTs and MFT Supervisors.

Demonstrating understanding of the legal and ethical priority of gatekeeping through interviewing, screening, vetting, and contracting of prospective interns, supervisees, or staff.

Utilize ethical vignettes to enhance critical thinking and decision-making in ethical and legal issues.

Increasing awareness of isomorphism in ethical, legal, clinical, and business in the agency, supervision, clinician, and client system.

Reducing legal and ethical issues such as triangulation, lack of competence, inappropriate countertransference, breach of confidentiality, dual and multiple relationships, insurance fraud, and supervisory liability.

Address appropriate management of countertransference as a legal and ethical issue.
This workshop meets the requirements and has been approved for 3 Ethic hours for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists in Louisiana by the Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
