Mental health and substance abuse disorders too often result in devastating consequences for significant others (e.g., families, partners, friends, etc.). Those who attempt to provide support for those struggling with addiction experience incredible stress, confusion, financial issues, and other difficulties. Yet there are very few treatment models designed to help families address the deluge of issues that overwhelms them.
As rates of substance abuse continue to rise to epidemic levels, countless individuals are affected. The burden of these families is complex, covering a spectrum of issues. Of particular interest are the number of children who struggle and run the risk of developing associated problems. The goal of this presentation is to help therapists become sensitive to families, friends, and others who attempt to care for a loved one struggling with addiction and become equipped to assist these families by discussing unique treatment models.
