Individuals with IDD are more likely to present with co-occurring behavioral health conditions. However, accurate assessment and diagnosis can be difficult if the impact of the individual’s IDD on the behavioral health presentation is not understood. Modified diagnostic considerations will be provided based upon the Diagnostic Manual for Intellectual Disabilities (NADD, 2016) along with other assessment adjustments to assure a comprehensive assessment can be completed and lead to successful treatment and recommendations for any comorbid referral issues.

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase clinician knowledge regarding assessment and diagnostic modifications such that they will be able to complete behavioral health assessments and appropriate diagnoses for individuals with IDD.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify at least 2 common challenges in Diagnosing Co-Occurring BH Conditions for individuals with IDD.

Describe at least two common medical considerations and rule-out considerations for individuals with IDD as part of comprehensive BH assessment and prior to rendering BH diagnoses.

Identify core modifications to major BH diagnostic categories when assessing individuals with IDD.

Describe core features of a comprehensive bio-psycho-social-developmental approach to assessment.
