Description

This presentation will focus on understanding the prevalence of behavioral health conditions for people with IDD. It will cover the following: a) observing and identifying symptoms for the main categories of behavioral health conditions, b) understanding the interaction between medical and behavioral health symptoms, c) communication between unlicensed and licensed clinicians in the course of assessment and treatment, and d) therapy and skill building modifications to consider.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to prepare clinicians to recognize signs and symptoms of behavioral health conditions, collaborate and communicate more effectively across clinicians and implement modifications to successfully engage individuals with IDD in therapy and skill building activities.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify similarities and differences in presentation of symptoms in the 4 main behavioral health categories (anxiety, depression, mania and psychosis).

  • Identify at least 2 considerations related to interactions with medical comorbidities.

  • Identify at least 2 appropriate modifications for therapy and skill building interactions.

Brandi Kelly, PhD

Dr. Kelly received her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from LSU in 1998 and post-doctoral master’s degree in clinical psychopharmacology from Alliant University in 2002. She has worked extensively providing person-centered and wellness focused support planning and behavioral health services to individuals with developmental disabilities and has published research on assessment/treatment of behavioral health concerns of individuals with developmental disabilities. She received the Bernard R. Wagner Leadership in Developmental Disabilities award, Special Recognition for Enhancing the Wellness of Individuals with IDD from the Arc of Louisiana, and currently sits on the National Association for Dual Diagnosis Continuing Education/Conference Committee.
