This presentation will focus on understanding emotional wellness and trauma for individuals with IDD. We will cover a) the needed support individuals with IDD have to attain and maintain emotional wellness, the positive impacts of an emotional wellness approach including prevention of more significant behavioral health challenges and associated crises, c) the negative outcomes and impacts when this area is ignored, d) the linkage of trauma to other emotional and behavioral presentations for people with IDD, e) the negative outcomes and impacts when this area is ignored and f) systems level and cross-systems challenges will be discussed.

The educational goal of this workshop is to better prepare clinicians to identify wellness needs for individuals with IDD, prevent crises and avoidable challenges, and implement trauma-informed approaches.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify and describe at least two key areas individuals with IDD may need additional support to maintain emotional wellness.

Describe at least two key linkages between emotional wellness and crisis prevention.

Identify two or more risk factors for trauma for individuals with IDD.

Explain at least two key considerations for recognizing signs/symptoms of trauma for individuals with IDD.
