Description

Join us for an exploration of the collaborative partnership between veterinary social work and veterinary chaplaincy, and its profound impact on comprehensive care both in veterinary settings and the outside community. Led by a licensed clinical social worker and a veterinary chaplain—both advocates for interdisciplinary care at the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine—this session delves into the symbiotic relationship between these two caring professions, showcasing how their combined expertise enhances the well-being of clients, patients, veterinary healthcare teams, and the community at large.

One of the most complex aspects of Veterinary Social Work is how to work with and manage the competing needs of a variety of stakeholders, including clients and their animal companions (patients), veterinary students, house officers, clinicians, and support staff. At the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine, the Counseling and Wellness team (consisting of three licensed providers, including a clinical social worker), address these challenges through collaboration with a Veterinary Chaplain. This partnership not only meets diverse needs within the veterinary community but also provides wholistic support encompassing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social care. We will share survey data illustrating the Veterinary Chaplain’s positive impact and highlight real-world examples where interdisciplinary collaboration has enhanced care and community resilience. Beyond the clinical setting, these professionals serve as catalysts for community resilience and animal welfare, reaching out to underserved populations and promoting well-being across our region.

Through illuminating case studies and successful community initiatives, attendees will gain practical insights into collaborative approaches that address pressing social issues and improve the lives of both humans and animals. Whether you’re a veterinary social worker, chaplain, allied healthcare provider, or community advocate, this talk will inspire you to embrace a wholistic approach to care and foster collaborative partnerships for the benefit of all involved. Join us and explore how integrating veterinary social work and veterinary chaplaincy can transform the landscape of veterinary care, as well as cultivating stronger, more resilient communities. Some highlighted topics will include: Comprehensive Care for Clients, Wholistic Support for Patients, Facilitating Ethical Decision-Making, Supporting the Veterinary Healthcare Team, Enhancing Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Cultural and Spiritual Sensitivity, Support for Grief and Bereavement, and Community Collaboration.
