Description
As social workers, our training requires us to work within the field as a student intern to apply all our theoretical school knowledge to “the real world.” Considering that veterinary social work is a new and emerging field, it is imperative that we make it accessible to the upcoming generation of future social workers by making internships available where possible. In this presentation, we will cover all the nitty gritty details of how to make a non-clinical MSW internship go from being a pipe dream to a reality. We’ll go over who you should talk to within your organization, and who you want to get into contact with at your local universities. Further, we’ll discuss what the MSW intern role looks like, the types of consults interns can handle, and perhaps most importantly: supervision—both group (for those of you who have more than one intern) and 1:1. We’ll talk about the onboarding process, interview questions to ask, and what orientation can look like to best set students up for success with the steep learning curve that veterinary medicine challenges them with.
Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Learn who to reach out to in your organization & within the social work schools to approve a social work field placement affiliation agreement.

  • Identify the ways in which the MSW Intern role can benefit not only your hospital clients and staff, but also your own social work skills as a supervisor.

  • Describe what is expected of the student intern, what is expected of you as a field supervisor, and what to do if there is a concern.
