In this presentation, participants will learn how to identify eating disorders in a substance use disorder setting and the importance of addressing eating disorders to support long-term sobriety. We will discuss the differences between disordered eating and eating disorders. We will also discuss the shared characteristics and risk factors between eating and substance use disorders. Participants will also learn the role of attachment in treating both eating and substance use disorders.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is for participants to identify EDO in a SUD setting.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe two key differences between disordered eating and an eating disorder

  • Identify three signs of untreated/active EDO in SUD setting

  • List 2 shared characteristics and 2 shared risk factors for co-occurring EDO and SUD

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the role of attachment in treating EDO and SUD

Brooke Huffstetler, LMFT, SEP

Brooke Huffstetler is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. She has been working in the field of chemical dependency since 2011 and has been on the staff of Ocean Recovery since 2014. Brooke specializes in treating eating disorders, substance abuse, trauma, and mood disturbances by integrating a variety of therapeutic techniques, including principals from Somatic Experiencing (SE), Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Attachment Theory, and the Twelve Steps.

Kelly Blasco, RD

Kelly Blasco is the Program Dietitian for the Residential Extended Care and Outpatient Program, focusing primarily on helping people struggling with eating disorders overcome their challenges. She has been on the staff at Ocean Recovery since 2019 and specializes in the treatment of eating disorders that co-occur with substance abuse
