Description

This presentation offers a comprehensive overview of adolescent mental health and substance use issues from the lens of complex trauma, including evidence-based interventions for assessment, clinical conceptualization, and treatment intervention. Attendees will participate in self-guided, as well as group exercises to practice trauma-informed skills. This presentation will also provide demonstrations on how to apply clinical skills specifically oriented to addressing adaptive patterns of both nervous system dysregulation and shamed-based identity distortions. Attendees will be introduced to specific assessment tools that will aid in their ability to conceptualize complex trauma symptoms and behaviors through the lens of attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, and developmental affective neuroscience.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge about adolescent health and substance use.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role of neurobiology and attachment related to emotion regulation, social engagement, and the development of a secure sense of self in children and adolescents.

  • Explain the link between complex trauma and addictive processes, citing at least 2 examples.

  • Identify at least 2 interventions for addressing shame and fostering a sense of agency.

  • Apply at least 2 practical strategies for addressing complex trauma patterns that drive addictive processes.

Mike Giresi, CAC

Mike found his passion for helping others through his own journey of healing and recovery. Mike is a Florida Certified Addiction Counselor and an Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Mike is also a nationally Certified Trauma Professional, Neuro Affective Relational Model® (NARM®) Practitioner, and received advanced training in Yoga and Meditation training while studying in India. Mike started his career in the mental health field working with adult clients who suffered from complex trauma and PTSD, as well as chemical and process addictions, and has since focused his attention on helping teens and their families find hope and healing.

 

In addition, Mike is a national speaker, consultant, and trainer on the topics of developmental trauma, addiction, and adolescent treatment. Utilizing his extensive training and experience in the fields of trauma, somatic psychology, interpersonal neurobiology, and addiction treatment, Mike is responsible for the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of individual, group, and family therapy programming for clients and their loved ones at Family First.
