Culture is an enduring element, a tradition that is embedded in every human thought, emotion, and behavior. Culture is also a key factor that upholds normed belief patterns that maintain physical and psychological health and contributes to healthcare outcomes. This presentation is for professionals interested in learning how to integrate the patient’s cultural traditions and beliefs into effective clinical treatment with Hispanic and Latino individuals.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase participants’ understanding of integrating patients’ cultural traditions and beliefs into effective clinical treatment with Hispanic and Latino individuals.

 

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain social and historical determinants of health.

  • Discuss three ways social and historical determinants of health impact the Hispanic and Latino populations.

  • Identify and describe two or more cultural elements or values that inform assessment and treatment interventions with Hispanic and Latino individuals

  • Identify two or more culturally responsive approaches in health care and discuss the historical significance of these approaches.

  • Prepare to use two or more culturally informed engagement strategies in practice.

Michelle Evans DSW, LCSW, CADC

Dr. Michelle Evans is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. With a passion for serving the Latino population, Dr. Evans has dedicated her career to the evaluation and treatment of individuals with mental health, substance use, and sex addictions, specifically focusing on this population. Presently, Dr. Evans is the Chief Executive Officer at Elgin Mental Health Center, a state psychiatric hospital in Elgin, Illinois. Dr. Evans is also a therapist in private practice at Nickerson & Associates, PC. Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Evans is a consultant and trainer at the National Hispanic and Latino Mental Health Technology Transfer Center. In this role, she has developed and presented culturally competent mental health practices for the Hispanic and Latino communities throughout the United States. Through her work, Dr. Evans actively cultivates equity, justice, and cultural awareness within the mental health field, fostering a more inclusive and sensitive approach to care.
