Description

This workshop will explore the use of humor in developing the therapeutic relationship as well as in the treatment of substance use and mental health disorders. These ideas are rooted in Martin Seligman’s theme of positive psychology while serving as President of the APA in 1998. Humor can be both an asset and a liability, dependent upon factors including the relationship, type of humor used, and timing, as well as the individual aspects of each client’s background and culture. Appropriate use of humor, as well as potential pitfalls, will be addressed.
