As professionals working with patients suffering from substance abuse disorders, it is essential to understand how substances impact the brain. From a clinical perspective, knowing what is happening in the brain is vital to understanding behaviors and symptoms. This training seeks to increase knowledge of post-acute withdrawal symptoms (PAWS) and behavioral interventions we can use with our patients to retrain the brain and decrease the discomfort associated with detox and early recovery.

Participants will gain understanding of how early recovery impacts the brain.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define addiction as a brain disease
- List 2 impacts of post-acute withdrawal symptoms on the brain
- Identify 2 benefits of neuroplasticity in treating the addicted brain
- Identify 3 different treatment interventions that utilize neuroplasticity to change the brain
Course meets the qualifications for hours of continuing education credit for LPCCs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
