As professionals working with patients suffering from substance abuse disorders, it is essential to understand how substances impact the brain. From a clinical perspective, knowing what is happening in the brain is vital to understanding behaviors and symptoms. This training seeks to increase knowledge of post-acute withdrawal symptoms (PAWS) and behavioral interventions we can use with our patients to retrain the brain and decrease the discomfort associated with detox and early recovery.

Educational Goal

Participants will gain understanding of how early recovery impacts the brain.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define addiction as a brain disease
  2. List 2 impacts of post-acute withdrawal symptoms on the brain
  3. Identify 2 benefits of neuroplasticity in treating the addicted brain
  4. Identify 3 different treatment interventions that utilize neuroplasticity to change the brain

Dr. Stacy Grossman

Prior to joining Origins in 2013, Stacy earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina in Wilmington, an M.S. in Clinical Psychology, and a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University. She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the state of Florida. Her experience in the substance use disorder arena includes mental health, substance abuse treatment, and psychological testing. She has worked in private practice providing mental health and testing services to adults and kids. She also has experience in an outpatient adult mental health clinic. Her teaching and training topics include addiction treatment in the LGBTQ+ community, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, and psychopathology. Her personal philosophy is that the whole person must be treated-mind, body, spirit-using resources and tools that are evidence-based and accessible to all people.
